According to the USDA/NASS Cold Storage Report, published at 2:00pm CT today:
February 28 AMERICAN-TYPE CHEESE stocks @ 597.0 million pounds, up 10.2% year-over-year and up 1.6% versus January 2010 (that compares to an average January-to-February increase of 3.0% over the previous five years).
February 28 TOTAL CHEESE stocks @ 983.6 million pounds, up 10.2% year-over-year and up 1.1% versus January 2010 (that compares to an average January-to-February increase of 2.1% over the previous five years).
February 28 BUTTER stocks @ 198.1 million pounds, down 3.3% year-over-year and up 17.7% versus January 2010 (that compares to an average January-to-February increase of 26.2% over the previous five years).

According to a press release, CWT has reactivated its Export Assistance Program for Cheddar Cheese Sales.
The intent of this move is to help reduce stocks and stimulate the markets. Export assistance was last used in 2008, but has been responsible for assisting a total of 186 million pounds of dairy products in the past. Additional incentives will be made for sales to Japan, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Australia, countries targeted by CWT as prime opportunities.
